AC/DC Highway To Hell

Highway to Hell is the title track of AC/DC's album "Highway to Hell" (1979) and one of the most famous rock songs in history. The song has got a very catchy guitar riff that's quite easy to play.

  1. A5 is a power chord, play strings 3,4 and 5.
  2. D/F# is what we call an inversion, in this case the first inversion of the common D chord. One difficulty: you need to mute the 5th string (with the flesh of your index finger).
  3. G5: same thing here, you need to mute the 5th string.

On the breaks you need to mute the strings with the palm of your right hand.

Some trivia about Highway to Hell:

  • The guitar riff is in the Mixolydian mode (a kind of blues scale).
  • The riff is made by Malcolm young, not Angus Young. Malcolm is Angus' older brother and the brains of AC DC. He plays rhythm guitar in the band.
  • The title "Highway to Hell" describes life while being on tour.
  • Another explanation: Highway to Hell is another name for the Canning Highway in Australia, a road that lead singer Bonn Scott frequently used to get to his favorite pub called The Raffles. Many people were killed in car accidents on that road after a night of partying.
  • Bonn Scott died from too much drinking 6 months after the release of Highway to Hell.
  • The producer of the album is Mutt Lange, ex-husband of Shania Twain.
  • Highway to Hell is n° 254 in Rolling Stone's "500 greatest songs of all time".
  • In the excellent movie School of Rock, Jack Black plays a teacher who wants to educate his class the art of rock and roll. At one point he teaches the riff of Highway to Hell to the guitarist of the class band.

Here are the lyrics for Highway to Hell:

Living easy, livin' free
Season ticket, on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too

I'm on the highway to hell
Highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
Highway to hell

No stop signs, speedin' limit
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
Nobody's gonna mess me 'round
Hey Satan! Paid my dues.
Playin' in a rockin' band
Hey Mama! Look at me
I'm on my way to the promise land

I'm on the highway to hell
Highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
Highway to hell

Don't stop me!
